This was quite frustrating for me since i could never log in to Ubuntu as Root and hence could never configure my internet to work on it coz the command :
sudo gedit /etc/resolv.conf
never worked for me, so i bugged lot of people asking about the same and hence found the solution!!
Login to Ubuntu with ur username and password. Goto System–> Administration–>User and Groups. Goto Root user, choose ur desired password. Close it.
Then Goto System –> Administration –>Login Screen–> Security Tab and then choose Allow root to login … something like this would be written… close gnome and logout and now u can login as Root!!

Unh, better than logging in as root and taking all that pains, just hit
gksudo nautilusand you’ll have GUI access as root to all files.
ab bata raha hai!!! Ubuntu se maje baad mein lunga!!
