How many times u searched for something over net and found a 10-200 KB file with the extensionn .torrent ??? U thought that this file is compressed with a tremendous ratio. But it didnt work since Winzip/WinRar/Winace or any other compression/decompression utility failed to open it. Then u tried each and every program on ur PC to open the file, but nothing happened. Then u searched net, found some softwares to use that file but still got no clue wat to do…. well if this has not happened to u, u r lucky… that was my story wen i didnt knew a bit about torrents.
The most important thing u must know is, Bit-Torrent is NOT illegal, its wat u download through it might be illegal or legal depending on wat u download.
Q. What is Bit-Torrent??
A. Well Bit-Torrent is a file sharing protocol like peer to peer (p2p) in which users connect to each other and then share some portions of files. All this is managed through a tracker (server) which manages the connections. The key feature of Bit-Torrent is that users must upload at the same time as they are downloading. So this utilizes the bandwidth in best possible way. The torrents supports resume functionality.
Q. What do i need??
A. U will need a Bit-Torrent Program, here’s a list of em.
I use Azureus and u may also like it if u have RAM>256 MB. After installing the program, u may need to restart ur browser. Also BitComet is banned by many sites and using it may result in ban for u.
Q. Ok, i installed it, now wat to do??
A. U cant search files through ur Bit-Torrrent Program, its not like Kazaa or Limewire. Instead u download certain torrent files from the web which contains the information about the data/files u want download, about the tracker etc. There are many sites which have huge collection of torrent files.
Before Downloading the torrent files, u need to look at two things.
Seeds: A Computer which has a complete copy of file which u r going to download through torrents. More the seeds, better speeds u will get.
After u finish downloading through torrents, ur client then starts seeding. Seeding is a good practice in general.
Peers: Peer is another computer to which u connect to transfer data.
More the number of peers, the better speeds u will get. U r a leecher if u r just downloading, u r a a part of swarm if u r downloading as well as uploading and u r a seeder if u r just seeding.
Generlly on various torrent sites,
S is for Seeds
P is for Peers
F is for number of files
After downloading .torrent file, on opening it, ur Bit-Torrent Client may ask the location where u want to save the file if u have not defined a default download directory for it or if u want to rename the file, etc etc. After doing all that, just leave ur client open and let the downloading begin.
Happy Downloading.
. Hope this helped u.
Downloading is called Leeching and Uploading (if u have a complete file) is called seeding. Its better to let seeding until ur share ratio is 1:1. UR Bit-Torrent program shows u ur ratio. But most ppl dont seed after downloading is complete. Read more at Ashwin’s Blog, here, Confesssions of a P2P torrents user.
PS: I CANT mention the sites to download torrents, coz my host does not allow them to be posted here. Sorry!!!
[EDIT] Edited to proper with due help from comments.

Wow my fav topic
I am a great pirate
Who told? You keep on leeching and wont share?
Shetwz,
Add this in your post if you find useful: (abt Private site)

Just forgot to correct some stuffs..
No, you are wrong.
Leechers are what you meant.
No. of Peers = No of seeders + Leechers.
Not really. It all depends on what peers you are connected to. Lol imagine if you are connected to BSNL users
And in case you wanna d/l from a private site, then use only
1. Azureus
2. BitTornado (I use this superb client)
3. utorrent
All other clients might be banned.

its not like that u wont share a bit, i meant wen u finish downloading most of the ppl wont seed coz that wud affect current download and hence may result in slower donloading…. hey i m a seeder anywayz
Thanx for pointing out th mistakes

Who told?
Did you see my ratio at BwT? I seed as much as possible with the frogshit u/l speed.
We can upload at 7-8KBps and d/l at 33kBps (and 0 upload) with a 256k/64k connection . Just try it out, we can u/l (seed) and d/l (leech and dont upload anything) at the sametime. Their won’t be any change in the speeds.

hmmm then azureus doesnt allow that coz i get poor speeds if i set upload to 2-3

Azureus sucks
Try BitTornado, you will forget all the shit clients available.

I am having no problems with Azureus.I download and upload at the same time. And upload speeds do not affect my download speeds.

I forgot to mention this:
Why should your d/l speed affect if you upload. BSNL/MTNL uses ADSL funda, you get seperate BW spectrum for u/l and d/l. If your speed is affected, it’s coz your client and not your connection.
Try BitTornado or utorrent and check the results.

dont know but i m still not able to get good dl speeds if i limit my upload to < 5kbps. guess i m the unlucky one….

[…] Since i m using Azureus, i m giving the procedure for that only. If i find time, i will post for others as well. For using torrents, refer to this tutorial. […]
