NAV 2006 Review

General, Reviews, Tech - No Comments » - Posted on November, 29 at 9:00 pm

Ok guyz i have finally switched back to my good ‘ol Norton after using Avast! for sometime. Ya ya, i said that NAV 2005 is a bloatware and i stand by that but there is remarkable difference between NAV 2005 and NAV 2006. The moment i installed it and and restarted the comp, it detected two viruses and repaired the files too. Stupid Avast!, didnt detect them in a FULL SYSTEM scan.

I first downloaded the trial version, used it for five dayz, and then got the full version.To start with, this version is way lighter than the previous one. NAV 2005 hogged my system so much, that i had to switched to Avast!.

With the development of new technologies especially in internet field the usage of software has increased. Now we have much special type of backup systems that maintain all logs of websites. There are now several types of web hosting providers with almost have same service and support. With the help of fast internet and seo software now every one has a little knowledge of search engine marketing. One can easily get website through domain registration and can start his own type of home based business websites to earn money online.

Minimum System Requirements :
For XP
* 300MHz or higher processor
* 256 MB of RAM
* 150 MB of hard disk spaceThere is no support for 98/ME/NT, coz MS have stopped their support cycle so has most of Software Makers. Although many ppl still release some patches, but mostly they are unhelpful.

New Feaures include:

  • Norton Protection Centre – An annoying tool which integrates with your Windows XP SP2′s Security Centre and alerts you of Windows Updates and Regular scanning and security stats and stuff… Now the problem is, it sits in ur taskbar poppig up again and again, so i just disabled its service. Run –> Serivices.msc —> Norton Protection Centre –> Disabled.
  • Spywares/Adwares/Hijackwares support – Well it was there in NAV 2005, but it did not provide real time scanning. It caught them only on Full System Scan. But this version supports both real time as well as full system scan.
  • Homepage protection – It locks ur Homepage so no application/spyware*adware can change it.
  • Double archive scanning — Scans archives inside of Archives

Before running the scan, it asks u whether to perform a FULL SYSTEM one or a QUICK SCAN. I chose FULL SYSTEM. The scan speed is gr8 as usual, it performed a FULL SYSTEM scan in little less than an hour, now mind u i have more than 120 gigs of data. Virus definitions are update almost everyday, unlike in previous versions, in which update took place only on Wednesday unless they were critical.

It scans incoming and outgoing e-mail, and it monitors IM traffic through AIM, MSN, and Yahoo Messenger. In addition, NAV monitors the network and notifies you of any wormlike behavior it detects. But a stand alsone is firewall is recommended.

Norton has retained their old kiddo type of interface which is gr8 for new users. New addition is that Live Update shows kinda countdown for number of dayz remaining of ur subscription. The scanning interface has had a complete makeover.

I dont know much about Protection Centre coz i disabled it the very first day. Well it shows alerts if ur Virus definitions are out of date and if u havent run a systm scan for a while.
With NAV 2006, users receive product upgrades as well as signature definition updates through the life of the subscription. Previously, you had to upgrade to the latest version of the software to take advantage of new features.The features are gr8 which some major improvements. But it still cud have been a little more lighter on the system.

I rate it 8.5/10.
